What bird control involves
A survey of the roof, ledges, plant areas, courtyards, canopies and any structure the birds are using, establishing whether they are roosting, loafing or nesting, and what pressure the building is under from surrounding sites. The system is then specified to the structure and the bird species, because a solution that works on a flat plant deck is wrong for a stone cornice.
Fouling clearance and disinfection are carried out before proofing goes on, so the system is installed onto a clean, sound surface rather than sealing contamination underneath it.

Why specialist work matters
Badly specified bird proofing is worse than none: sagging netting traps birds, spikes fitted to the wrong profile simply get nested on, and gel or scaring devices generally move the problem 20 feet along the roof. Specification is the whole job, which is why the survey is free and thorough.

What happens if it is left
Building fabric damage
Guano is acidic and corrodes cladding, paintwork, stonework and metalwork. Left long enough it turns a cleaning job into a repair job.
Water ingress
Nesting material blocks gutters, hoppers and downpipes. Overflow tracks into the structure and the cost lands as damp, staining and internal repairs.
Health and safety risk
Fouling makes surfaces slippery and carries a genuine biological hazard. For employers and premises operators that is a duty-of-care issue, not an aesthetic one.
Secondary insect infestations
Bird nests and fouling support Dermestes beetles and bird mites, which then enter the building from the void.

Step 2: Specification
The system is designed to the building: netting, spikes, Avi-shock, controlled shoots or a combination, with access and fixing methods set out. You get a clear price before anything is ordered.
Step 3: Clearance and preparation
Fouling, nesting material and debris are cleared and the area disinfected so proofing is installed onto a clean, sound substrate.
Step 4: Installation
Carried out by IPAF, CSCS and SSSTS accredited operatives with the correct access equipment, under £5m public liability and £10m employers liability cover.
Step 5: Verification and completion
The installation is walked and checked for tension, coverage and gaps, and handed over with written detail of what has been installed and where.

Systems and materials
Bird netting is the most complete exclusion system available: tensioned net on a wire and fixing framework, specified in the correct mesh size for the species, used to close off courtyards, canopies, plant decks, atria, soffits, balconies and recessed elevations. Correct tension and edge detailing are what stop birds getting behind it.
Bird spikes suit ledges, parapets, signage, chimney stacks, lamp columns and window heads where the profile is narrow. Avi-shock systems provide a low-profile deterrent track for sensitive or listed elevations where netting or spikes would be visually unacceptable. Controlled shoots are used where a population inside a building or on a site cannot be resolved by proofing alone, carried out lawfully and safely.
Choosing the right system
Pigeons loafing on a wide ledge, gulls nesting on a flat roof, and starlings entering a soffit each need different answers. The survey looks at the profile of each surface, the level of pressure, the access available, the aesthetics of the elevation and whether the structure can take fixings.
In most commercial jobs the answer is a combination: netting to the recessed and high-pressure areas, spikes to narrow ledges, and clearance and disinfection throughout beforehand.
Wildlife management
Alongside bird work we deal with grey squirrels in roof voids, where chewed cabling is a fire risk and roofline repair is the permanent answer, moles damaging lawns, pitches, grounds and estates, and foxes causing fouling, digging and damage around yards and gardens. Control is humane, lawful and followed by proofing so the space is not simply re-occupied.
Residential versus commercial
Domestic bird work is usually spikes or netting to a roofline, chimney or balcony plus clearance of the fouling below. Commercial work involves risk assessment, method statements, access planning, phased installation around the operating site and written records on completion.

How much does bird proofing cost?

How long do netting and spike systems last?
Specified and installed correctly they are a long-term fix, which is why the survey stage matters more than the product. Poorly tensioned netting and wrongly profiled spikes are the reason people end up paying twice.
Which is better, netting or spikes?
They do different jobs. Netting excludes birds from an area entirely and suits recesses, courtyards, canopies and plant decks. Spikes suit narrow ledges, parapets and signage. Most commercial buildings need a combination.
